I
received these numbers today from Paws in the City. This
is the motivation for doing what we do!
"Everyday we witness first hand the tragic consequences
of pet overpopulation." Paws in the City
Locally:
In 2007-2008, the City of Dallas shelter alone took in 36,531 dogs
and casts.
For the most recent fiscal year (2007-2008) Dallas Animal Services:
*euthanized 27,355 dogs and cats (20,029 dogs and 7,326
cats)
*adopted out 1,698 dogs and 270 cats
*redeemed back to owners 1,885 dogs and 70 cats
*rescue organizations saved 991 dogs and 474 cats
Estimates are 70,000-80,000 are euthanized each year across
the Metroplex.
Nationally:
Each year in the United States, 3-4 million animals are euthanized. Every day
70,000 kittens and puppies are born in the United States, which is alarming,
considering only 10,000 people are born on a given day.
